Flipboard: Your Social News Magazine full review
Flipboard has been around for a while now, gathering rave reviews, adding native support for iPhone, Android, Kindle Fire, NOOK devices and recently the ability to read themed Flipboard magazines online. According to the team behind the app, Flipboard, "Is on a quest to transform how people discover, view and share content by combining the beauty and ease of print with the power of social media." With the ability to customise content suited to your interests, it's a claim that stands up well, despite a recent increase in the number of news gathering rivals, including the excellent Zite.
As a social-news aggregator, Flipboard supports an extensive range of accounts including Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Linkedin, Instagram and many more. Signing in adds, where applicable, yet more tailored content, from your Facebook timeline for example. Additionally, users can create a free Flipboard account, which adds the ability to read favourite sections anywhere on any device, and create and manage personalised magazines to share with others or keep private. This is a great idea, and even if you struggle due to time restraints to curate your own, plenty are available to browse, and many impress with quality, carefully considered content.
Browsing content, available under various categories including new and noteworthy, is a breeze with simple intuitive set-up and clean, clear design, which can be customised to increase the size of text from normal to large to Mr. Magoo pleasing extra large. This latest 2.0.7 version is iOS 7 compatible and Flipboard notes the update will see overall speed improvements, taking advantage of the way Apple's new OS loads content in the background and conducts reader notifications. iOS 7 also adds the ability to bring "magazine covers to life" using the newly introduced Parallax technology, which cleverly creates an illusion of depth when viewing images. It all looks promising for an app, which is already a joy to use.
