If you have a G5 and need more storage Box Clever has just the thing. The GBox is an external FireWire hard drive designed with the G5 in mind. It shares the same style of aluminium casing, and that cheese-grater front grille. It’s like your G5 had a baby.
Apart from its aesthetic value, the aluminium case also acts as a heat-sink, meaning the drive doesn’t require a fan. That means it runs almost silently, or at least quieter than the G5. The model we looked at was a FireWire 400 version, though there is a FireWire 800 version that will give slightly higher performance.
In previous tests, we found that FireWire 800 offered a 30-40 per cent increase in speed. If you’re doing work that requires a rapid drive, it might be worth investing the extra £50 for the speed boost.
One area where the GBox is lacking, and some of the competition has an edge is software. The Maxtor One-Touch drives for example, include backup software, whereas the GBox doesn’t.
There are four capacities of GBox: 120GB, 200GB, 250GB and 300GB. Each of those configurations is available with either FireWire 400 or FireWire 800.
Extra hard-disk storage has become a bit of a commodity, and there’s a wide choice of solutions. The GBox is reasonably priced, and it’s attractive to look at, so it has everything going for it. Ultimately, the looks and price will be the main decision maker, because performance will be the same as any other FireWire drive.
