GraphicConverter 5.8 full review

GraphicConverter is an all-purpose image-editing program that can import 190 graphic-based formats, and export as any of 75 file formats, in batch mode if required. Version 5.8 includes improvements to the colour profile and printing dialogues, the addition of a gamma slider and extra slideshow features, among many others.

It’s the sheer range of editing options that make this program such value for money. Its many effects include Unsharp Mask and Sharpen Edges – both offering a good degree of fine-tuning – as well as one-click white point and gamma correction.

The Filters menu is every bit as jammed as Photoshop’s, containing almost every distortion and stylise filter known to man, plus a range of handy blurring options. It also boasts iPhoto-style image-management features. And while it lacks layers, it does allow for the easy merging of images, and, once merged, a full array of blending modes can be applied.

Although slideshow features are now common in image editors, I hadn’t yet seen one that could play a sequence of video files. I’m not sure when I’d use it but, like so much in GraphicConverter, it’s nice to know it’s there.
