IDAPT i4 full review

The IDAPT i4 is a universal power charger that can charge up to four mobile devices simultaneously.

This is incredibly useful if you own multiple gadgets – mobile phones, MP3 players, cameras, battery chargers, portable games consoles and sat navs – and are forever misplacing the power chargers.

IDAPT i4 is compatible with over 4,000 mobile electronic devices including the Apple iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Nintendo DS, PSP, GPS systems, digital cameras, and various Bluetooth products.

It features three charging points that use a simple, customisable and interchangeable tip system.

In addition to gathering all your charging options in one place, the IDAPT is a lot neater than the usual tangled jumble of charger cables hanging out by your overloaded power socket.

Indeed the IDAPT i4 looks rather lovely in its own right, smart and glossy like the latest gadgets themselves. It’s even available in 11 colours (glossy and matte blacks, silver, white, light and metallic blues, scarlet, lime green, hot pink, orange and gold).

(The older IDAPT i3 omits the very useful USB slot, and doesn’t look as slick, and lacks the i4’s handy LED charging indicators and top-panel power switch.)

The obvious problem with such an inclusive product is that it hits so many bases that it specialises in none, and it’s unlikely that many people will own an iPhone, as well as Samsung, Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones.

At home my family owns two iPhones, two iPods and an iPad, as well as a couple of Canon cameras (which require proprietary chargers anyway).

Straight out of the box the IDAPT will help me charge just two of the devices at one time – via the iPod/iPhone charging tip and the USB port.

The six standard tips included are: Nokia 2, SonyEricsson 2, Samsung 4, iPod/iPhone, miniUSB and microUSB.

You can buy extra charging tips, at a cost of £4.99 each. In my case that would mean adding a tenner to the price, and throwing the supplied Samsing, Nokia and Sony Ericsson tips in a dusty drawer – just in case one of these manufacturers creates something better than Apple…

As I don’t think I’m alone in this Apple-only gadget situation it would make sense for there to be a special Apple-specific IDAPT available, with three iPod/iPhone charging tips only.

And brilliantly you can choose a custom pack of four tips, which could all be Apple-specific if you so wish (there’s even an iPod shuffle tip available to choose from).

Without this option the IDAPT i4 would be too universal for its own good, unless your house is stuffed with more varied gadgets than mine.
