FS-C5150DN full review
It’s not the fastest printer, but Kyocera’s FS-C5150DN is competitively priced and offers attractive running costs for both mono and colour printing.
Like the Epson C3900DN, the FS-C5150DN has been around for a while now, and has dropped from its original price of £399.00 to around £240.00 on a number of online stores. Its printing costs have come down too, thanks to bundled sets of all four CMYK cartridges that we’ve seen online for about £260.00 (£65 per cartridge).
The cartridges only come in one size, but the black cartridge should last for a healthy 3,500 pages, while the colour cartridges stretch to around 2,800. That works out at just under 1.9 pence per page for mono printing, and 7p for colour. Those are good prices – especially for colour printing – so the FS-C5150DN is a good choice even for self-employed individuals on a tight budget.
There’s a 250-sheet paper tray located in the base of the printer, with a second multi-purpose tray that can hold a further 50 sheets of paper or envelopes. The FS-C5150DN provides USB and Ethernet interfaces, and provides duplex printing and PostScript 3 compatibility. But, like the veteran Epson printer, it lacks modern features such as wifi networking and support for Apple’s AirPrint.
It’s not the fastest laser printer we’ve ever come across, either. Kyocera quotes speeds of 21ppm for both mono and colour documents, and we did get around 18ppm with our mono text documents. Unfortunately, the FS-C5150DN struggled a bit with our colour test documents. It seemed to take quite a long time to process the first page of our PDF test files, and we had to record its overall speed for colour printing as a modest 7ppm.
Print quality was very good in both cases though. Coloured graphics were bold and strong, and we particularly liked the fine detail that the FS-C5150DN brought to smaller text sizes.
If you need to print lots of colour documents every day then the FS-C5150DN may not be fast enough for you. However, its competitive running costs ensure that it is still a good choice for any business that needs a high-quality printer that will help them to keep costs under control.
