Mobile Drive Mg U&F review
Freecom’s Mobile Mg drive was specifically designed for use with Macs, and its slim magnesium design makes it a good companion for the latest MacBook models.
There’s a standard USB 2 version, but we prefer this U&F model, which has both USB 3 and FireWire 800 interfaces. This model is only available with 750GB storage.
Connecting it to a USB 2 port on our office iMac produced a data transfer speed of about 250Mbps, but that was outperformed by the drive’s FireWire interface, which ran at 373Mbps. And, of course, owners of new Macs that have Thunderbolt will be able to get full USB 3 speed once suitable adaptors become available.

Freecom also gets full marks for Mac-compatibility, as the drive is pre-formatted in Apple’s HFS+ format. It also includes a power-saving ‘green button’ program that allows you to specify the length of time that the drive can remain idle before putting itself to sleep.
