SteelSeries 7H Headphones full review

SteelSeries has always been known for their impressive gear aimed at gamers. The SteelSeries 7H headphones is aimed at Pro Gamers (or at least gamers who take their gaming very seriously). The headphones come at a definite premium but are they really worth it? Let's find out.

The SteelSeries 7H is powered by twin 50mm drivers and has a frequency response of 18-28,000 Hz with an impedance of 32 Ohms. It has a retractable uni-directional microphone that fits into the left earcup with a frequency response of 50-16,000Hz. The 7H also comes with two pairs of interchangeable ear cushions- one made of leather and the other with fabric. It also has a cable that reaches almost 10ft. in length with a braided nylon cover.

Design & Usability

The SteelSeries 7H is a well-built pair of headphones that uses plastic, leather and fabric in its body. The headphones can be disassembled into three separate parts so that you can easily pack it when travelling. However, in spite of that, the headphone feels solid without any unwarranted creaks or movements. The 7H is also very comfortable to wear and you can wear it for hours without any complaints.

As I mentioned above, the 7H has a 10ft. long cable that does feel like a tad too much. Especially, if your PC setup is already messy to begin with, the 7H's cable just adds more to the clutter and confusion.

The SteelSeries 7H is one of the best gaming headsets I've used and it certainly beats the Creative Fatal1ty MKII. The 7H delivers impressively balanced sound and without an over-emphasis on bass like most headphones. Trebles are also kept in check and at no point (even at high volumes) did the high-end turn shrill. I tested the 7H with games such as- The Last Remnant, Duke Nukem Forever and Red Faction Armageddon.

The 7H also gave impressive performance when it came to movies and music. Bass-friendly music didn't sound "over-thumpy," something that suited me, although it may not if you like bass-heavy headphones like the ones from Skullcandy. I listened to the entire Foo Fighters' "Wasting Light" album and the headphones certainly did justice to the music. Movie dialog and sound effects were also handled well.

The microphone was a bit oversensitive and sample audio I recorded were punctuated by my breathing but overall, the mic works well too.

The 7H excels in keeping out external noise and when gaming I was unable to hear a myriad of things such as my doorbell and even my phone.
