Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land full review
Based on the works of HP Lovecraft, The Wasted Land is a satisfying turn-based RPG/strategy hybrid. Set during World War I, it’s a tale of British soldiers and a few handy mystics attempting to dismantle an occultist sub-division of dastardly Germans – but unfortunately the latter are able to call up all manner of Cthulhian horrors to assist them. Every turn you command each soldier to move, take a shot, use a special power (from artillery strikes to psychic blasts) or heal wounded allies. Between missions, you spend earned experience on upgrading their abilities and cash on new gear, and in this respect the game is a refreshingly blank slate. The touch controls are sadly on the wonky side, but the developers are pushing out patches regularly, so stick with it.
