Sony DVP-FX730 7-inch portable DVD player review
While the iPhone, iPod touch and now iPad offer a way to watch films and TV on the go, a dedicated portable DVD player requires no iTunes fees or potentially lengthy film format conversion. The Sony DVP-FX730 7-inch portable DVD player has plenty of compatibility and plays DVDs, DivX formatted AVI film files, MP3s and JPEGs from both disc and USB stick. The latter is unusual for a portable DVD player and allows for several files to be played, depending on the size of the USB stick, including those you have recorded yourself.
The Sony DVP-FX730 comes with both mains charger and built-in battery, which promises five hours of playback after charge, enough for many travel journeys, although a car adaptor is also included. The DVD player is compact and fairly lightweight yet feels much more solid than several similar players we have seen over the years. Well styled, in a choice of colours, an array of controls are available on both the unit itself along with a fully-featured dinky remote control. A rather fiddly On/Off switch lets the side-down somewhat though, particularly if you’re watching in bed.
The 7-inch LCD display - measured diagonally - offers decent viewing, at a fairly wide angle as well, which means you can have two or more watching at once and make use of the duel built-in headphone jacks. Colours are generally rich, with good blacks, although playback can appear a little soft at times depending on the source. Sound too is pretty solid and loud and clear enough to be heard over the daily hubbub. Playback from both DVD and USB is fairly quiet, so you can listen at lower volume, in a bedroom for example, without that annoying whirling sound.
The onscreen menus are straightforward and simple and include a selection of playback options including 16:9 widescreen format. When you need to take a break from viewing, disc resume ensures you can boot up a DVD where you left off. While not the cheapest portable DVD player available, the DVP-FX730 can be found discounted online.
The Sony DVP-FX730 is an impressive portable DVD player, solid and stylish, picture and sound quality is good, the ability to play a selection of formats from DVD and USB excellent. A reliable five hour battery life should also ensure those long journeys are eased with some choice viewing.
