HiRise for iPhone 5, iPad mini full review
Twelve South's latest Apple accessory extends the HiRise line from iMac and MacBook to iPhone 5 and iPad mini with this stylish aluminium stand and docking/charging station. Supplied effectively flat packed, it requires assembly, which is best done distraction free on a clean desk top as the supplied parts are a touch fiddly. Thankfully, Twelve South provides ample instruction, especially via online video, for doing this.
Once assembled it forms a solid, secure and adjustable base not only for iPhone 5 and iPad mini but iPod touch (5th generation) and iPod nano (7th generation). The HiRise uses the Lightning to USB cable exclusively, which Twelve South insists allows your iDevice to be docked and charged using "practically any case," thanks to Apple's use of height-adjustable clips. Unless you are lucky enough to have a multitude of iDevices in an array of covers, this is a great option that saves time and effort undressing and dressing your Apple device. That said, the stand forms a tight fit and we recommended you take care docking and undocking your device.
While stylish - all that sleek aluminium is certainly desktop eye candy - the stand clearly has a purpose. The HiRise raises your device to a comfortable level for checking email, Facebook, Twitter, using FaceTime and Skype, and viewing news, sport and weather updates via apps. Not recommended for the larger iPad (4th generation), fixed in portrait mode, it's less successful for video, TV and catch-up services, reducing your screen size significantly, especially on iPhone 5 and iPod touch. The stand is also a useful solution for keeping your Apple device safe from harm and easy to find, essential if you lead a busy life.
