Tap to Chat full review
There’s no shortage of chat and social-networking apps available, so newcomers need to offer something special if they’re going to stand out from the crowd.
Tap 2 Chat offers individual apps that can be combined into a single super-chat app. There are currently two free apps – one for Facebook chat and one for Google Talk – or you can pay £1.19 for the combined app that lets you use both chat services at once. The developer is planning to add MSN and AIM to the mix too.
When you launch Tap 2 Chat it displays a dock at the bottom of the screen, containing icons for Facebook and Google Talk. You switch between services by tapping on these icons, or you can hide the dock for some extra screen space and switch between Google and Facebook simply by swiping your finger across the screen.
On the iPhone you see thumbnail pictures of your friends. Tap on one to activate the on-screen keyboard and start chatting. The larger screen of the iPad displays a bit more information, such as recent updates, and a few lines of your most recent chat with that person. The paid-for app also includes some additional features, such as the ability to create favourites.
