Equinux TubeStick review
Like Elgato’s EyeTV, the TubeStick is a DTT tuner (digital terrestrial TV). It can’t receive ordinary analogue TV signals, so you’ll need to check the digital reception in your area before buying it, or opt for one of the other tuners here that can handle old-fashioned analogue TV as well.
The Tube software supplied with the tuner works well, and allows you to quickly record programmes either by clicking on them in the built-in programme guide or manually scheduling a time for the recording yourself. Equinux has also stolen a march on Elgato by releasing an iPhone app called LiveTV, which allows you to stream live TV channels straight to your iPhone. The LiveTV app is free to download, but we did have a bit of a struggle setting it up, so there’s room for improvement there.
We also found the software’s activation system rather irritating, as you have to create an account on the Equinux website before you can use the software. Even then, you’re only allowed to use The Tube on one machine at a time, so you can’t use it on both a desktop and laptop machine unless you deactivate it on one machine before reactivating it on the other.
