Fire-i FireWire Colour Digital Camera review
This webcam is quirky, and the only one on test to come with its own camera-style tripod. But the really interesting thing about the Fire-i is that several can be daisy-chained (eg for home surveillance) and viewed simultaneously.
Granted, this isn’t for anyone who doesn’t feel confident with long set-up procedures or who just requires a basic webcam for messaging services. But if you’re happy to go through a bit of rigmarole, then this is a webcam that packs a much more complex punch than any of the others assembled here.
You get the feeling that it’s inspired by Unibrain’s high-end camera products, which are aimed more at industry and business users. There’s a Sony CCD colour sensor, 640 x 480 picture size and the ability to capture either videostream or still images. White balance can be set to automatic or manual and there’s a built-in image-processing feature that helps deliver crisp, clear picture quality. The Fire-i is nicely put together too.
