Hauppage WinTV-HVR 900
Hauppage recently bought Pinnacle’s old range of TV tuners for the Mac, and is in the process of merging them with its own range of TV tuners for Windows PCs. As a result, the HVR 900 is one of the few TV tuners that works with both Macs and PCs, using Hauppage’s own WinTV software for PCs and a copy of Equinux’s Tube software to use with Macs.
It’s a bit bulkier than the neat little EyeTV and TubeStick, but that’s because the HVR 900 is a ‘hybrid’ TV tuner that can work with both analogue and digital TV signals. That makes it a good choice if you live in one of the parts of the UK that still has poor digital reception. The HVR 900 also has a separate video input that allows you to connect a VCR so you can record your old video tapes and convert them into digital format that can be stored on your Mac.
The Tube software works well, although, as we’ve already mentioned, we find its activation/deactivation process a bit annoying, especially if you want to use the tuner with both a desktop Mac and a laptop.
