Tone Mapping 2.1 review
Tone Mapping 2.1 is a cut-down version of the standalone Photomatix Pro 4.1 HDR-creating application. It offers all the tone-mapping power of Photomatix minus the Exposure Fusion part that cleans up exposure afterwards.
Once installed, open an image and set the Mode to 16-bit or 32-bit. You can convert it back afterwards. The plug-in will map the tones in an image for a more balanced spread across the tonal range. This is most useful for landscapes, usually when there is high contrast in the scene, resulting in dark foregrounds.
This image had a very dark foreground but the plug-in created a nice balance
There are eight presets to choose from, a Details Enhancer and a Tone Compressor panel that allow you to tweak the results. Tone Mapping works well and allows everything from a standard result to mono conversion and the more cartoony colours favoured by some.
