Spotify for iOS full review

Arguably one of the most popular music streaming services, Spotify allows users to listen to 13 million tracks for free (although peppered with ads) on a computer; or on their iPhone via the £10 per month Spotify Premium service.

Spotify Unlimited is the cheapest subscription offer at £4.99 per month (desktop only). It ensures that users have unlimited streaming time and no adverts, while Spotify Premium builds on the Unlimited package by offering access to Spotify from an iPhone and iPod touch.

A neat trick is that tracks can be stored locally on the iPhone. This means you can listen to tracks even when you haven’t got a data connection, or when you’re out and about and don’t want to waste your 3G data contract.

In this sense, Spotify becomes an almost complete replacement for (or at least an effective addition to) the iPod app built into the iPhone. Premium members also get exclusive content, as well as an impressive desktop streaming rate of 320kbit/s. The iPhone app is limited to a bitrate of 160kbit/s, though, which is slightly less than we7 but still fine. On the whole, music via Spotify tends to sound better than the tracks you’ve ripped into iTunes.

With 13 million tracks and shared playlists, Spotify remains the most popular choice
