Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic for iPad full review
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is widely considered one of the greatest Star Wars games, not to mention one of the best role-playing games of all time. So any review of it would be bit remiss if it didn't suggest you go out and buy a copy.
It's a good 10-years-old now, and Star Wars: KOTOR has been converted to Mac, PC and most console platforms, so KOTOR has done the rounds. Most keen gamers, and most role-playing fans (not to mention most Star Wars fans) will already have played this game, so we assume you know what you're doing. But if you haven't then consider this your chance to enjoy one of the greatest games ever made. If you've not played this game before then go to the App Store and buy it.
KOTOR on the iPad is a genuinely good conversion, and Aspyr deserves a lot of credit for the way it has brought such a classic game to the iPad. It uses on-screen controls: left side for panning, right side for movement combined with double tapping for moving towards on-screen items or attacking. Although we typically don't like on-screen controls, thinking they usually never live up to the console gamepad, in this instance it all seems to fit the game well.
In terms of the game itself, if you haven't already played it then expect something along the lines of Mass Effect, which takes a lot of its gameplay style from KOTOR. It's a third-person role playing game based in the Star Wars universe roughly 4,000 years before the events of Episode IV. You team up with other Jedi and travel the universe tracking down Darth Malek, the Dark Lord Of The Sith. Expect to visit lots of planets, and talk to lots of characters in a Star Wars setting.
The game itself is fantastic, the combat is surprisingly in-depth and it's been ported to the iPad perfectly. The graphics are a little on the low-res side these days, and it's clearly not pushing the iPad to its limits. But the depth and structure of the main story are definitely something to experience. It's a classic for a reason.
