ShapeShifter 2.5 Review
It’s not often we look at our desktop and think ‘I really wish my Mac was more emo today’, but we’re sure some people do. ShapeShifter will suit the whims of such fickle folk, reskinning your Mac’s Finder and applications with bespoke themes.
Mac OS X already gives you quite a lot of control over colour schemes and background images through the Preferences panel. ShapeShifter boasts that it changes everything, including menus, icons, buttons and windows. We’re happy to report a fairly painless experience with the product.
The program runs as a Preferences pane item, launching after a slightly more complex install than usual. To get a quick sense of what the application’s capable of, head to the Download section, where an archive of ready-made themes awaits.
There’s a predominance of game influenced desktops on display here – as well as one or two interesting themes. You’ll find minimal skins, cutesy entries ideal for old school iMacs and lots of weathered windows with distressed menus. There are even reinterpretations of the old Platinum theme.
Once you’ve made your pick, switch to the Apply section and try out the new look on your Mac. You can apply changes to icons, desktop, and Finder. Thankfully, you can restore default themes just as easily. If your Mac is used for work and play, you can choose to exclude certain applications.
They say a change is as good as a rest. With ShapeShifter you can make a change to your Mac whenever your mood dictates. Perfect for those black Wednesdays and sunny Mondays.
